This is a Seeburg A produced in 1949. It is the first 100 play 78 rpm produced.
A friend of mine in California (I’m in NY) found this jukebox for me
and called me on the phone. Needless to say it was in such great condition
that I had him purchase it for me. I had C’s and G’s in my possession and for some strange reason believed this was the same cabinet size with different trim. Boy was I surprised when this mammoth jukebox arrived at my house. I couldn’t believe how much larger than the C and G it was. The first thing that was done was the mechanism was removed from the cabinet, cleaned, degreased and lubricated. I was so pleased to find it soon selecting with some minor adjusting. Of course there wasn’t any sound at all from it. We tested the cartridge only to find that it was shot. For all of you owners of Seeburg A’s, I’m sure you can share with me the shortage of cartridges for this juke. I then contacted West Tech and they stated they would probably be able to rebuild it. They did and very successfully I might add. Once the amplifier was rebuilt, new tubes installed and new needles inserted, it was sounding pretty good. There were a couple spots on the cabinet that had a chunk taken out of it. Of course recreating that faux finish is never easy but it came out alright I suppose. Not perfect but better than the missing wood. New red grill cloth, new grill bars were installed. We bought new reproduction instruction glass, pricing glass, and 100 select emblem on the mechanism cover. The mechanism cover was repainted, but the mechanism was left the original paint as it was in good condition. This jukebox was later sold on ebay to who now is someone I consider a friend of mine and is no longer in my possession. |
